Background
Graphic design today has became a distinct practice and more and more tied to corporate business world and advertising. One of the roles of a designer is connecting clients and the public or consumers. Designers are responsible for how a company or product is preceive to the audiences. But often, designers are ignoring their roles in society and the responsibility that comes with them. Just like Tibor Kalman said in 1997, “ I began to worry about what we designers, who are very skillful and have powerful tools at our disposal, are doing in the world making a filthy oil company look ‘clean,’ making car brochure higher quality than the car. Is that all okay, or just the level to which design and many other professions have sunk?” So the main question is “What is a Code of Ethics to a graphic designer and what use is it? Isnt it just another boring slab of legalese, more pompous than pertinent?”

First of all, thank you for taking the time to provide us with this interview.
Please tell us a little about yourself and your design background.

My name is Harry JH and I’m a self-taught freelance graphic designer. I founded and managed my home studio Digitalgrafis (www.digitalgrafis.com) and has been in the business since 2004. More information about me can be found either on that website or on my personal site www.harryjh.com

Never had any formal education in design, I learned (and still learning) about design by myself – mostly from books and the internet.

What is your favorite project or design from all the projects you have done so far?

The project was commissioned to me by a Geneva-based NGO Borneo Tropical Rainforest Foundation (BTRF) for their side-event at 2007 UNFCCC Bali Conference. I did the concept and designs for the whole package – from the event’s logo, teaser posters and marketing collaterals, website, up to the large exhibition prints and stage backdrop of that event.

Do you consider yourself as a successful designer? And what does the word success means to you?

This is a tricky question.. haha. :) In terms of self-fulfillment as a designer, I might say yes, since I love what I do and so far I find that most of the clients I work for are satisfied with my works. In terms of financially, of course I want more! Haha..

I think success for a designer for me is when your works get recognized for it’s good quality, that you are recognized for your professionalism and that you are well-paid for both. :)

What does ethical means to you?

I think ethic is a term defined (if not derived) based on norms in certain cultures or societies. It’s something we feel about the morality toward specific things. Good or bad, right or wrong, justice or injustice, which in some cases its definitions can be vary if looked from different perspectives. What is ‘good’, anyway? I mean the term ‘good’ to Western cultures could be the opposite for Asians. What’s right to one person might be wrong to the others. Of course there are things we universally agreed but for specific issue it really depends on each person’s perspectives.

As for me, ethical is doing things which not contradict with my belief and values. Either it’s my religious, family, social or personal values.

As a graphic designer how much does ethics influence your design?

Honestly I didn’t think of it much. :) Perhaps because (so far) I never got the jobs which contradict with my belief or requests of extreme visuals, for example. But I should say ethics would contributes to my decision to do a design or not. :) But not because it’s right or wrong, simply just because of my personal values.

Do you think designers need to set certain standards of ethical guidance for their design practice?

Yes and no. Yes by personal belief and no by the sake of design as a dicipline. Why?

Let’s say you’re a designer who works on an agency – which happened to have that filthy oil company you said on your introductory as a client, and your Creative Director orders you to make that client look ‘clean’, would you quit your job on the spot? ;)

For the sake of design, I think you should produce the best work measured by design standards and by the assignment’s objectives. I call it professional, either you like it or not. What’s right or wrong is not yours to decide. You may feel uneasy or dislike but that’s not your fault and that should not affects your work. But you also should have one point where you really fed up and couldn’t stand it anymore (based on your personal values) – then you may object or walk away. How far is this one point? Ask yourself, ask your conscience.

If I were contacted by Playboy or Penthouse and they ask me to redesign their site and they would pay very good money for it, would I do it? As a designer – who will think about how ‘exciting’ the visual concept and design I will create – I won’t think twice. Ha.. ha.. But as a father who have kids and respects family values, I would say no. ;)

How about things like sustainability, do you think designer have to care about that, because it relates with how you use the material, paper, printing processes etc?

This is also an interesting question. Honestly, I think designer is the most energy-consuming single person in the world! Ha.. ha.. We designers often constantly turn our extremely-hi-power-super-fast-processing workstations on, many even have more than one display monitor – perhaps 2 or even triple. Compare to people who works in the office who turns their computer on at 9 and turn it off at 5. :)

But, I think we have to be aware of the issues also, as much as we can. I mean, we could and should start to educate clients to accept PDF/JPEG visual mock-ups for example – instead to print it out. Or suggest recycled/environmental papers for print publications. Or use online project and conference tools, instead of driving across a traffic to a face-to-face meetings. Internally, we could start to work paperless in our studio/office and do small things like buying/using the best energy saving displays, turning off the computer display during rendering/long downloads, well… small things like that.

Logo

The logo is constructed from a combination of wordmarks ’90itb’ and a symbol which replaces the zero of number ’90′. The symbol itself is made from the combination of 4 arrows pointing to the center, represents the gathering of class of 1990 alumnis from all 4 directions (north. east, south, west) into one location. The different colors of the arrows represent the variety and rich characters of the 1990 alumnis and/or their study’s major.

Additionaly the Latin words in persevero progressio (progress in steady persistence) may be added, derived after ITB’s tagline in harmonia progressio (progress in harmony).

Overall, beside represented/read as “90itb”, the logo also can be interpreted/read as “go ITB” – a loyalty and support to the almamater.

I love my iPhone and iOS4 works smoothly on it. Except for one (small?) annoying thing: immediate closing of an opened app. I mean, if you run iOS4 in your iPhone and say, you are opening the Facebook app, here’s what you have to do to completely close it (Other iPhone iOS4 users, please enlighten me in case I’m wrong):

- First you have to tap the Home button
- Then double-tap the Home button again to bring up the multi-tasking bar
- Then tap and hold the Facebook app icon to bring the closing (-) mark
- Then tap the (-) mark to completely close it
- Finally tap the screen to return to the home screen

I mean, what is that? Those bunch of procedures just to close an opened app? It’s very “not Apple”, right? ;)

Perhaps Apple’s UI experts have thought about it, is working on it and will integrate new finger gesture regarding it in the next update of iOS4. But I wrote the following email anyway.

Could you please tell your UI Designers to somehow integrate a finger gesture to immediately close an app on your next iOS4 update? Tap and hold, double tap the app’s topbar, tap hold and slide down, whatever.

It’s just kinda annoying having to double tap the home button and close the app one by one. Also thought it’s very “not Apple”. :)
