Running Chrome OS on Virtual Box

November 22nd, 2009 Posted in Applications, Internet, Thoughts

After several failures to run Chrome OS on VMWare Fusion in my Macbook, I finally gave up and try Virtual Box on my XP instead (using the same vmdk file downloaded from GDGT). Using practically the standard settings, it works smoothly! – This post was actually started by logging in from Chrome OS. :)

So how’s Chrome OS looks like (and feels like)? At this early stage, I think it’s too early to tell (or judge) the whole experience. It just feels like.. well, using Chrome (browser). :) but with quick login and additional (home?) icon on the taskbar to open other applications.

You can login using your Google account and after that you got a Chrome browser-like display. It doesn’t support bigger resolutions than 1024×768 yet and felt a little bit laggy. It opened webpages smoothly including Flash websites, although several times it freezes that I need to restart it (It also freezes when I toggled out of the OS to go to Virtual Box panel). Well.. perhaps it was my settings.

If you would like to try and screencapture it, my suggestion is to install/use 3rd party screencapture application as the keyword shortcut is not functioning (I used TinyGrab).

Have a nice try. Love to hear what you think of it! :)
